How to Make Your Windows Look Larger Than They Are

The way to get bigger windows is to make sure that you have the properly-sized openings, but there are other solutions for making your windows appear larger if you can’t afford to do that.

Have you ever seen the message inscribed on the side mirrors on your car? The one that says “objects in mirror may be closer than they appear”? That’s because the illusion of distance and motion can trick your eyes into perceiving something as bigger than it is. You might encounter a similar dilemma while deciding which replacement windows to get. The way to get bigger windows is to make sure that you have the properly-sized openings, but there are other solutions for making your windows appear larger if you can’t afford to do that.

Change the Curtains

The first way to make your windows look bigger is to change the curtains. Getting more natural light into the room, no matter which one it is in your home will make a big difference; darker curtains and window shades will either stop the light or absorb all of it instead, meaning you get less light inside, so choosing light curtains can have a much more significant effect than you might realize.

Play with Dimensions

Another trick is to play with the dimensions of the windows. Depending on the type of window you have now, you can move blinds and curtains. Hang longer drapes from the point where the ceiling and wall intersect. Instead of just changing out the curtains, you can also switch out the curtain rod. Choose a curtain rod that is longer than the one you’ve been using. Then, place the drapes at both ends of the long curtain rod. These small adjustments can also fool the eye.

Use Mirrors

Since small windows don’t let in much light, you’ll have to think of unorthodox ways to change that. Another way to let more light in is to add some mirrors to the room. Choose a mirror that you like for the room with the window in it. Put this mirror under the window or on the wall opposite the window instead. Any sunlight that does come in will reflect and help open up the room.

Change Window Treatments

Play around with the window treatments that you use on your windows. After all, using vertical patterns can help windows look taller while horizontal patterns can help them like wider as well.
