What Makes an Effective Replacement Window?

Knowing what to look for will help you to choose the best replacement windows.

If you are new to the world of replacement windows and want to make sure that you buy an effective replacement window, then window shopping may seem difficult and confusing. How do you know your windows will last? What should you look for in an effective replacement window? Capital Remodeling is here to help. Here are our three top qualities to look for in an effective replacement window.

Seasonal Performance

Windows and doors are both rated by two values: Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and U Values. The SHGC measures the incident solar radiation that is transmitted through window glass. This measurement ranges between 0 and 1, with 0.3 or lower being ideal. The lower the SHGC, the less heat is allowed into your home during the summer. The U Value is also measured in a numeric range between 0 and 1, with 0.3 or lower being ideal. The U Value is the overall heat transfer coefficient. A window with a low U Value is better able to trap heat in the home during the summer. The ideal replacement window has low SHGC and U Values.

Sealing That Won’t Fail

Window seal goes around the perimeter of the sash on a double-paned window and is essential for the longevity of your windows. Many homeowners complain of their window seal failing, which means that their windows need replaced again! To make sure you do not become one of these homeowners, make sure that the spacer of the windows you buy do not have any sort of metal support. Because metal tends to absorb temperatures, the extreme hot or cold of the metal that is making contact with the seal will cause the seal to fail. Failed window sealing allows moisture and debris to accumulate between the two panes of the windows where they cannot be cleaned. Avoid unsightly windows by paying close attention to the window seal!

Fade Prevention

When shopping for the most efficient replacement window, look for windows that have good UV protection. Many windows already come with UV protection, but the glass only deflects around 70% of UV rays. Windows with great UV protection will deflect up to 95% of UV rays! This means that your furniture, hardwood floors, drapes, and more are all protected against fading. Not only will your windows last a long time, so will the interior of your home!
