Kitchen Remodeling Ideas: Planning Out Your New Pantry

Many homeowners assume that remodeling the kitchen means adding a second sink, installing replacement windows, or figuring out where to place the kitchen island.

Many homeowners assume that remodeling the kitchen means adding a second sink, installing replacement windows, or figuring out where to place the kitchen island. While all of these projects are indeed valid, something that you might not realize is that your pantry deserves to be upgraded as well!

The Door

Pantries take many different forms. It all depends on the size and layout of the kitchen. If you live in a smaller townhouse, you might not have room for an actual pantry, and you make do with shelves oriented around the passthrough from the kitchen into the dining room. Alternatively, your pantry could be located between your kitchen and your mudroom, or in the basement. Regardless of its location, your pantry will probably need a new door. Some options include barn doors, hanging doors, cabinet-style doors, and folding doors.

The Lights

Don’t forget about the lights that you use in your kitchen pantry. Whether you integrate an overhead light in your pantry controlled by a switch or some task lighting activated by pressing a button, both are reasonable ways to illuminate the storage space and help you find what you are looking for with a minimum of frustration.

The Storage

Speaking of the storage, make sure you have enough room for all the food and associated items, such as cookware or grill tools, that you want to store in your pantry. Having the right shelves and cabinets can make your life easier. How can you save and retrieve the items you wish to keep on the top shelves? This step is where you need to think about accessibility – a step stool or step ladder can make a huge difference, as can cabinets that are lower to the ground. Use a concealed lazy Susan to reduce the amount of bending and stretching you need to reach smaller items, such as lids for pots or grip covers for pans.

The Organization

How are you going to organize your pantry? The better organized it is, the less cluttered it will be. Eliminating clutter is one of the easiest ways to make your kitchen and its pantry much more functional and easy to use than before.
